Ben Kweller

Ben Kweller’s new record Go Fly A Kite is in stores, like Waterloo Records, now. Here’s a few shots Marty captured for Ben at his studio and in his Astro Van. And on top of his Astro Van.

Take Shelter Poster

We co-created this poster (click image to enlarge) with Jeff Nichols and Sony Pictures Classics for his second feature, Take Shelter.

“The image featured…might be simple,
it nonetheless denotes some powerful
and poignant features which might take
audience by surprise.”

Online Movie Hut

“This poster has a perfectly eerie feeling
to it that captures the film’s tone…It’s a
great indie poster design, eye-catching
yet still inspired by the film itself.”

Here’s the trailer. Go see the movie in October.

Gomez

ATO Records called a month before SXSW and said Brit rock stars Gomez would be in town and they needed promo shots for the launch of their record, A New Tide. We pitched them on two locations – they liked both. Marty shot them at The Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems and The Agave for a half day. Everything was photographed using available light. The simple images were inspired by the rock and roll photography of Elliott Landy – particularly his images of The Band. It’s an attempt at an honest documentary approach in a era where so much imagery is over-lit and over-styled.

Ben Kweller

Ben Kweller moved in down the street from Adam. The rest is history. Ben needed some images to promote his new album, Changing Horses. Marty went over to a South Austin session with a super fast 50mm prime and hung around while the band worked. The images are a simple and gritty reveal of the tenacity of Ben in the studio. He is incredibly energetic and personable. At once a producer, writer and performer – it’s clear he was born to do this work. He also wears camo t-shirts with the sleeves cut off.

Premium Records

Over the years we’ve done a lot of work with Bruce Robison and his wife Kelly Willis. They are great people and great musicians. Bruce is a song writer, performer, producer, et al – our work amplifies his many pursuits in the music industry. Occasionally we become Bruce’s client when we hire him to compose music for a spot or a film. In the end, nothing beats catching his set at the Broken Spoke, tilting a few cold ones and making laps around the dance floor.

Shotgun Stories Poster

Poster we designed for Jeff Nichols first film, Shotgun Stories. The chilling drama of southern half-brothers fighting. With accents. And guns. Shotguns. Like the Hatfield-McCoy scuttle but these boys have all got the same daddy. Feauturing Michael Shannon and a soundtrack by Ben Nichols of Lucero.

Willie Nelson

Everyone remembers the tsunami. We didn’t quite know how to participate in the recovery effort and then this public service opportunity came along. Willie, Spoon, Joe Ely, Natalie Maines and many more participated in this powerful event at the Austin Music Hall. We worked with Willie and his crew after the show to generate this cd package, which raised a fair amount of money for the survivors. Marty illustrated the cover, retouched the photography and designed the layout. Images were provided by Cambria Harkey.
