Thanks Eric... the idea that they are on loan is more of a concept. No corporation should 'own' such a creature - no matter how much beer they sell. I know they aren't going back to the ocean, but those animals belong to all of us - like a National Park or one of Obama's ties...

Nice, thoughtful piece. I agree with the idea that Sea World has great potential to inspire its audience into action, large and/or small. But I'm not sure that Sea World's even minimal efforts are much more than window dressing, at least for now. As you point out, they're in a position to do more, but until they really see themselves as more than an amusement park that happens to have animal acts, it's not going to happen.

And I'll have to take issue with the idea that Sea World's animals are "on loan from the ecosystems from which they were harvested." That implies an eventual return from whence they came. They were taken from their ecosystems for our entertainment and potentially our education, but they ain't going back.

Bro, you've exposed another unfortunate reality, I bet Sea "Circus"/San Antonio would be praised world wide if your vision showed up in town.

Perhaps they could partner with more evolved stewards of our planet: http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cffo.asp
